iPhone 6 Hands-On: Apple’s Future Is Big and Beautiful

We knew for months that Apple was bumping up the size of its next iPhone, and the company’s event made it official. We actually got two different models this year: a 4.7-inch iPhone 6, and a much larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. Take your pick, but Apple obviously wanted to cover the spread with different sizing options. That’s always been something Android manufacturers have been able to hang over Apple’s head, but now finally the iPhone maker has joined the trend.
It’s unusual to say that Apple’s 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is a moderate size. When we played with the dummy unit a few months back, it was easy to see how much of an improvement the larger screen would make to the experience, even against Steve Jobs’s wishes. What we have here now is an exceptionally thin (6.9mm) device, with beautifully rounded edges and a “Retina HD” screen, which has a 1334×750 resolution.
To be fair, it’s a familiar Apple design, taking cues from devices like the iPad mini and iPod touch, but in a more refined package. At 4.7-inches, the devices doesn’t feel big; the thinness might help perpetuate that illusion, or maybe it’s just that we’re used to from bigger devices. It’s also really light, and the power button being moved to the right side is in the perfect spot. You won’t have to stretch your hand up to the top just to sleep/wake your device. It looks like a major step up from the iPhone 5s, and we know how much Apple fans loved that design.
We’re a little surprised to see Apple move away from the chamfered edges, but the subtle curves flow seamlessly into the curved edges, which feels lovely to hold. It feels like one entirely engineered piece of glass and components, fitting perfectly to allow you to type, swipe and tap around the OS. Although we knew this design was coming, it’s still striking to see the finished product in person. It’s still among the more handsome-looking devices around.
And this is just the 4.7-inch model! Apple also has a larger iPhone 6 Plus, which we also got our hands-on. Check out our hands-on to see the iPhone 6 in action, and stay tuned for much more coverage from Apple’s event.
